CHAPTER SEVEN

TENSION vibrated through her as he raised her left hand slowly, deliberately to his mouth. Her finger was reddened from tugging at the ring and he pressed his lips to the mark, the tip of his tongue salving the tender flesh.

White heat flared through her. She tried to pull free but his grip tightened. His eyes challenged her to renew the struggle.

So he wanted a fight, did he? Deliberately she held herself quiescent, although a volcano of feelings surged close to the surface. She would not give him the satisfaction of struggling so he could conquer her.

But something was wrong. Muscles which should have been stone yielded to his touch as he stroked her shoulders and the slim column of her throat. She could barely restrain the moan which formed deep in her throat.

Cupping the sides of her head, he tilted her face upwards. Nervously she licked her lips and saw the muscles work in his jaw. Then he clamped his mouth over hers, driving every sensible thought out of her head.

She should hate him, hate what he was doing to her, but the taste of him...the tantalising flicker of his tongue against her teeth was the stuff madness was made of. Her mind reeled and she clutched at him, unwillingly affected by the perception of muscles rippling under her hands, by hard flesh and sinew straining against impeccably tailored cloth. It was like feeling a surprise package with your hands, the suspense sweetly agonising, the possibilities infinite.

For fleeting moments she gave herself up to the exhilarating sensation, as he continued to kiss her with a thoroughness which left her breathless. A thousand ‘if only’s skated through her mind until she groped for some vestige of sanity. Given the way he felt about her, did she want to start this again?

Did she have a choice?

His fingers threaded through her hair, the gentle pressure making her scalp tingle. She parted her lips to protest and regretted it as he deepened the kiss, ecstasy spearing to the centre of her being.

She wasn’t sure which of them she hated most at that moment—him for forcibly reminding her of the chemistry which still crackled between them, or herself for offering so little resistance. It was all she could do not to melt into his embrace and surrender to whatever demands he chose to make.

Where was her pride, her self-respect? How could she consider surrendering to a man who thought so little of her? Her palms beat at his shoulders. ‘Let me go.’

His arms dropped to his sides but he stayed close, his cynical expression making her want to hit him. ‘Still having a problem with honesty, Penny?’

She flinched but held her ground. ‘No problem at all. Letting you touch me was the dishonest move, knowing what you think of me.’

‘You’re so sure you know what’s in my mind,’ he observed. ‘I can assure you if you did you would be blushing to the roots of your beautiful bronze locks.’

His caressing look was all
